Why do I love clay. Let me count the ways, 5 ways to be exact.
As a holistic esthetician I take a rather radical stand on exfoliating the skin. No peels or acids. That means no AHA's, retinols or glycolic acid. No microdermabrasion and while I am at it no dermaplaning. Can you imagine eliminating all those from your arsenal of tools? Is there really something effective and safe to replace them with? I believe so and for 15 years I have been using it on myself and my happy clients. It's called clay and I am excited to share why I love it.
Clay is not just for oily skin, mature skin loves clay too.
We know oily skin can benefit from clay, but most of us are under the understanding that mature skin types need to stay away from clay. Not so! Because clay is natures safe and gentle exfoliator that makes it perfect for mature skin. One of the functions of the skin that weakens as we age is our skin's ability to remove metabolic waste products. Dull, sallow, lifeless skin awakens when we use clay. Dead skin cells that are having a hard time sloughing off due to the aging process are also helped along by clay, again in a safe non invasive way. I encourage all my mature skin beauties to use clay regularly. I recommend once a week or at a minimum once a month.
Clay is a must for oily and congested skin.
Clay is known for its ability to draw from the skin. Here is a super example from my own life,
I once stubbed my big toe. In the middle of the night I was awakened by a intense throbbing in my stubbed big toe. It was so painful there was no way I was going to be able to get back to sleep. I tried soaking my foot. I put different creams on it. Nothing was working. Then I remembered clay! I took some clay and applied it to my toe, pulled a soak over my foot and was able to drift off back to sleep. In the morning my toe had returned to normal and was pain free.
You are also probably familiar with bee and wasp stings being soothed by mud (clay being a form of mud).. An excellent sting remedy.
All this points to clay's awesome ability to draw impurities from the skin. If you suffer from acne, clay is your best friend. Ditto for blackheads. It's also excellent for enlarged pores.
Clay is an amazing smoother and refiner for the skin.
My last reason you should be using clay is for its remarkable ability to smooth the skin. Does your skin ever feel like it could be softer, less bumpy and lumpy? Clay really improves the texture of the skin, making it soft and supple. Soft and supple skin is the goal for our skin, as our skin truly glows when it is in this condition. Our beautiful natural skincare products can penetrate the skin with ease when the skin is soft and supple.
Not sure how to go about using clay on yourself or your clients? I got you covered. I made a short video to demonstrate how I play with my favourite skin enhancing wonder ingredient.
