There is always something stirring in my mind as I travel down the road of being a holistic esthetician. I've been thinking about the importance of keeping the skin soft and supple. Who wouldn't want skin that could be described as soft and supple? So how do we achieve that type of skin, and appearances aside, why do we want to encourage our skin to be naturally soft and supple?
The Steps To Soft Supple Skin: Ha ha, you might think as many of us have been taught to, that a good expensive moisturize is the ticket to soft supple skin. Lets back up a bit.....well quite a bit. Hugely over looked in my experience with clients is the importance of cleansing the skin. So many of us take for granted this step. Some see it as a chore, with no other goal other then to get rid of the dirt and grim of the day. Cleansing is where soft supple skin starts. You must understand what is in your cleanser and what those ingredients are doing to the health of your skin.
You see your skin has this special bacterial concoction that is naturally makes. It's rather like our gut flora, but it's on our face. And its there for a reason. Our bodies are smart and our skin is smart. Our skin makes this lovely protective oil, often referred to as the ph of the skin, the skin's acid mantle and more recently the skin's mircobiome. What we use to cleanse our face can either wipe out this natural culture or protect it and respect its integrity. Being a Dr Hauschka aesthetician for 15 years, I recommend the Dr Hauschka Soothing Cleansing Milk and the Cleansing Cream. Both of these cleanser meet the requirements for respecting your skins natural functioning, that being, they contain no soaps. With my clients the first step on the road to balanced skin is to stop using soap or any type of cleanser that is foamy or sudsing. Yes, these type of cleanser clean the skin, but they do more then that, they strip the skin or its own healthy oils.
When your natural oils are taken off the skin daily or twice daily, the skin has a very hard time replacing those oils. Some skin will become dry and for some skin the oil glands will get out of whack and actually over produced oil. Either way your first step in caring for your skin has already unbalanced your skin.
Getting back to this idea of soft supple skin, hopefully what I have shared has helped you to understand that how you cleanse your skin contributes to it either being balanced or unbalance. Once we ditch the soaps and foamy cleansers, we can choose high quality oil based cleansers. Now we can really begin to talk about nourishing the skin. Oil based cleansers respect the skins ph. They don't wipe out your skins naturally and highly important mircobiome. Oil based cleansers such as the Dr Hauschka ones, protect the moisture barrier of the skin, which contributes to the skin being soft and supple.
Now that you know the first step to achieving soft supple skin, to inspire you to take this step I want to share the why. Why soft supple skin? Skin that is soft and supple can do one of its many jobs which is to eliminate waste products. Soft skin is skin that can excrete metabolic waste products that our body produces. When the skin can freely eliminate then it has more glow, it's more radiant and it's soft and supple. Skin that is soft and supple allows all the wonderful organic oils and essential oils in your skincare to absorb better into your skin. If the skin is dehydrated (even oily skin can be dehydrated) and when the skin is rough, it is harder for ingredients to penetrate. I think of my skincare as a way to feed my skin. I want my skin to be able to take in all the wonderful nutrients in the products I apply. Since our skin is transdermal I take it a step further with this concept of feeding the skin, and expand it to feeding my body. Essential oils applied topically enter our blood stream while the high quality oils and herbs in my skincare can support the health of my whole body not only my skin.
There are many ingredients that help promote skin softness and a favourite of mine is carrot root extract found in many of the Dr Hauschka products. High in vitamin A, it promotes smoothing of the skin and helps it to be soft and supple. Don't be fooled by products that advertise as having vitamin A in them. Choose a whole plant form of vitamin A, your body recognizes it and uses it with more ease. Vitamin A as a single isolated ingredient in your skin care has had to have either been synthetically made or extracted using a procedure that involves nasty solvents. I wish it was easier to trust skincare brands to actually be 'for' the health of our skin.
Lastly there are no short cuts. If you choose the short cut method to achieving smooth supple skin it will eventually catch up with you. Short cuts are, chemical peels, AHA's, retinols, mircodermabrasion ...the list goes on. All these do give fast results of smooth supple skin, but they thin the skin, weakening it and kill it's all so important protective microbiome.
Healthy skin is a commitment that will pay you back over and over in the long run.
I have been busy this summer training new Dr Hauschka aestheticians. One of the differences between traditional aesthetics training and Dr Hauschka training is a focus on working with rhythm. One way we do this is being in tune with the seasons. I have always enjoyed thinking about how each season effects us. It delights me that the Dr Hauschka philosophy also very much works with the seasons. We are deep in summer now, in fact the season is even starting to turn. Summer is quite hard on our skin and it's a time that we tend to give it less attention.
In Summer we tend to be busy and active. The warm weather calls to us to be outside more, and longer days see us busier, with extended hours to do more. In all of this outward activity we tend to lose focus on our own selves. Each season brings its challenges to our psyche and our skin. What products worked for you in the winter might not be what your skin needs at this expansive time of the year.
We do well to take into consideration the higher level of activity, the quality of light and amount light (sun) exposure, our mood and the weather, all these impact our whole being and our skin. I once remember a yoga teacher talking about how fiery summer is and as I tuned in I realized how revved up I was. Some times we need a counterpoise to the high activity and expansiveness of the summer season.
We also need to ensure that we are supporting our skin in the summer months. There are 3 products that are essential to me in the summer. These are the Facial Steam Bath, Clarifying Clay Mask and the Revitalizing Mask. What they do is help refine my skin, making it smooth and supple. Our skin get a lot of exposure to many harsh elements in the summer, and these 3 products support the skin to be soft and supple. Keeping the skin supple allows our skin to rid itself of waste products which in turn mean our skin is clear and has a radiance to it. Soft skin also allows nourishing product ingredients to penetrate into the skin.
At home you can first steam your face using the Facial Steam Bath. It contains an extract of daisy flower which helps the skin eliminate toxins with ease. I follow my stream with a application of the Clay Mask, this is my secret potion that restores a smooth surface to my skin. Lastly after removing the clay I apply a thin layer of the Revitalizing Mask, which contains borage and propolis, both excellent for repairing the skin from summer exposure.
Summers End Restorative Facial
If your not a DIY person I will be offering a Summer Restorative Facial from August 13th to the end of September.
This is a customized facial that will focus on helping your skin recover from the exposure it has dealt with over the summer. I apply 2 masks in this custom facial to really help repair the skin. Your skin will be encouraged to eliminate with the facial stream bath followed by a restorative application of the Clay Mask and a second mask application, the Revitalizing Mask to repair the skin. Also used in this facial will be an ampoule application of the Revitalizing Night Conditioner, which is an amazing homeopathic like water based booster shot for your skin.
